Why SOMA
The Living Body
SOMA is rooted in the understanding that the body is a living system—intelligent, adaptive, and continually responding to its environment. Rather than viewing the body as something to be corrected or optimized, SOMA honors it as a source of information, creativity, and resilience.
When we listen to the body with attention and respect, we begin to move with greater clarity and ease. This relationship with the living body becomes the foundation for how we care for ourselves, how we relate to others, and how we participate in the world around us.
Our Approach
Care as the Starting Point
At SOMA, all movement education begins with care. Care for the nervous system. Care for individual experience. Care for the rhythms and capacities of each body—adult and youth alike.
SOMA offers movement practices as containers: intentional spaces that support organization, creativity, and joy. Through structure, breath, and guided attention, the body is invited to reorganize itself—finding efficiency without force, expression without pressure.
Pilates at SOMA is practiced as a system of organization rather than correction. While the work supports alignment, strength, and coordination, it does so through awareness and intelligent sequencing—allowing change to arise from within rather than being imposed from the outside.
This same philosophy informs SOMA’s youth programming. Classes are designed to cultivate curiosity, confidence, and a respectful relationship with the body—establishing a foundation of care before habits of tension, comparison, or over-effort take hold.
Beyond the Individual
The effects of this work do not stop at the individual level. When bodies are supported, nervous systems settle, and people feel more connected within themselves, that care naturally ripples outward—shaping families, creative communities, and shared spaces.
SOMA believes movement is not only personal, but communal. By supporting the living body, we contribute to environments where creativity, presence, and collective well-being can thrive.
Supporting the living body as a foundation for individual and collective well-being.
